Post-Event Roundup

Cruise for Haiti 2010 was held on Saturday August 28th. Thanks to the many people who participated, to our generous sponsors and our supporters, we raised $3,200 towards rebuilding the Grace Children’s Hospital which was badly damaged in the January 12th 2010 earthquake. This is a real boost to our colleagues in Haiti and to our rebuilding fund which has recently received a gift of over $1,000,000 from the NHL’s Players’ Association. Thank you so much for being a part of this exciting project.

Judging from the level of participation and the overall feedback received, the event was a great success!

Highlights of the cruise include:

  • Several people came from out of town to join us on the cruise!
  • The kindness and generosity of those who donated including the following sponsors: 365 Partners, Château Lafayette, Chez Lucien, Orleans Radiator Ltd.
  • Providing numerous door prizes thanks to our supporters: Eddy Cavé, Christa’s Hair Design, Cindy’s Unisex Beauty Salon, Concept Home Theatre, Daddah Ink, Goyave Restaurant, Michel-Ange Hyppolite, Suzanne Potvin and Sylvie Sauvé.

Again, thanks to everyone who participated!

Your ongoing support of our efforts is greatly appreciated. We truly hope that you will be able to join us on the Cruise for Haiti 2011 event, our 10th edition, scheduled for Saturday August 6th 2011. Details will be posted in the coming months at www.cruiseforhaiti.com.

UNICEF estimates that over 3 million people (approximately 1 in 3 Haitians) were severely affected by the earthquake on January 12, 2010. The physical damage done to Port au Prince and the surrounding areas is going to take a long time to repair and the human consequences will have a similar slow recovery. Haiti needs our help, and will still need our help next year, and the years after that.

ICC has been working alongside the people of Haiti for more than 40 years to change the conditions of poverty that impact health and well-being. Grace Children’s Hospital, founded in 1967, is the flagship ministry of ICC. Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from tuberculosis, HIV and other diseases. Both children and adults can be treated at one of Grace Children’s Hospital’s many outpatient clinics. They receive vaccinations, prenatal care, and other basic health services from specially-trained community health workers and volunteers.

The January 12, 2010 earthquake has heavily damaged this hospital and its clinics, which are so essential. Although many of the buildings on the ICC Haiti Campus are vulnerable and unsafe, most of the outpatient services at the Grace Hospital are maintained and open on the grounds of the hospital.

International Child Care is committed to maintaining the services offered by Grace Children Hospital, which has a long-standing reputation of being a leading provider of excellent healthcare in Haiti. Since the earthquake, ICC has responded with emergency personnel and medical supplies. ICC has also been busy raising funds to rebuild destroyed or severely damaged structures, to support staff and to sustain or adapt programs in Haiti.

With the support and generosity of individuals in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, we are hopeful that great change and progress will be achieved in Haiti, and that ICC will be able to continue the legacy of care and love for the people of Haiti through the Grace Children’s Hospital and outpatient medical clinics.
